Empower Your Beauty Choices: Host a Not So Pretty Watch Party

Recently, I embraced the idea of hosting a socially responsible gathering with a group of friends from my local moms’ circle. Instead of the typical wine and snacks, the evening revolved around personal care products and our shared commitment to using safer alternatives. Each guest arrived with a favorite product in hand, ready to engage in an enlightening discussion.

As someone entrenched in environmental health, I constantly confront the reality of hazardous chemicals that pervade our daily lives. From unsuspected toxins in air quality to harmful substances lurking in the foods we consume, the quest for safe living often feels overwhelming. It’s alarming to note that even seemingly harmless household items, like cookware and clothing, can harbor dangerous compounds like lead, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), bisphenol-A, and persistent organic pollutants such as PFAS.

Despite the daunting nature of this challenge, I’ve found motivation through my children. The thought of them questioning whether I did my utmost to safeguard their well-being pushes me to take action. Therefore, this gathering was more than just socializing; it was an opportunity to delve into personal care products, an area where informed choices can lead to significant change.

Unpacking the Toxicity of Beauty Products

We began our evening by screening the four-part HBO docuseries, Not So Pretty. The series navigates the troubling aspect of toxic chemicals in beauty products, highlighting a heart-wrenching story of a mother whose child suffered severe health issues linked to cosmetic contaminants.

This documentary spurred a desire to act collectively, leading us to download the Clearya app, which reveals potential hazards in cosmetic ingredients. As we scanned our products, we were confronted with alarming findings. Ingredients such as isobutane and cyclotetrasiloxane popped up as potential carcinogens and sources of hormone disruption. It was a wake-up call—realizing that we'd been unknowingly trusting brands that fell short in prioritizing our health.

Throughout the evening, it became clear that mere marketing claims of being 'clean' or 'natural' often don't correlate with true safety. Products we had once confidently used now bore flags for toxicity risks. Clearya equipped us with the necessary insights to decipher ingredient safety, effectively debunking the façade that many brands present.

Taking Action Beyond the Party

The impact of our watch party didn’t end once the night was over. Energized by our discussions, we began to scrutinize our beauty cabinets with a newfound zeal, filtering out products laden with harmful chemicals. The group chat soon filled up with messages of alarm and exchange over the ingredients in our possessions—messages like “Ugh, my sunscreen has oxybenzone!” and “Why is there DMDM hydantoin in my lotion?” highlighting our collective drive for safer alternatives.

😭

However, we realized that the issue extends beyond our immediate circle. Advocating for the safety of beauty products is critically linked to broader public health and environmental stewardship. Thus, we initiated a campaign, reaching out to our congressional representatives to demand robust laws regulating cosmetic safety. Just as we took action, you can also contact your lawmakers to support the Safer Beauty Bill package and contribute to a much-needed overhaul of beauty product safety regulations.

Understanding the Regulatory Landscape

Currently, thousands of chemicals are present in the beauty and personal care products we employ daily. It’s alarming that while Europe has banned nearly 2,500 such substances, the U.S. FDA has only restricted or banned a mere eleven ingredients. Over 10,000 chemicals circulate within these products, leading to a pressing need for more stringent regulatory frameworks to protect consumers.

Ultimately, our gathering for Not So Pretty was a pivotal moment of awakening. As we concluded our evening, we left fueled with empowerment, motivated to safeguard our families from the hidden dangers that often accompany personal care products. Each of us pledges to effect change, transforming our own lives and contributing to a healthier and safer beauty industry, one informed choice at a time.
