Embracing Coastal Wellness: A Personal Journey Beyond the Aesthetic

Coastal wellness has emerged as a trendy concept, especially among those drawn to an aspirational aesthetic depicted on social media platforms. This phenomenon often showcases idyllic scenes of farmers' markets, picturesque Cape Cod vacations, and leisurely lobster meals—all wrapped in a narrative that glamorizes the life of a "coastal grandmother." However, this portrayal doesn’t represent the reality many of us face. As a coastal granddaughter, my experience with wellness at my grandmother's side was entirely different—rooted in simplicity, authenticity, and meaningful moments.

A Trip to Remember

My recent coastal wellness experience began with the simple pleasures of coffee and lobster, a combination I could imagine my grandmother chuckling at as I sipped my oat milk and maple sea salt latte. My sister and I set off from Portland to Acadia, embarking on a three-hour drive. The GMC team provided us with a brand new Yukon Denali SUV, elevating our journey with heated seats, soothing music, and a cozy atmosphere."I don’t know how we’re going to top this," my sister mused, surrounded by the brilliant hues of autumn leaves.

Our stay at Under Canvas Acadia was a blend of rustic charm and comfortable amenities, aligning with the no-frills ethos of my coastal upbringing. While it’s not typical for tents to include scenic ocean views or a plush king-size bed, we embraced the lack of modern conveniences, managing without Wi-Fi or electricity and utilizing lanterns and flashlights for light at night. Our attempt at building a fire, humorously enough, resulted in triggering the fire alarm.

Chasing the Sunrise

We set our alarms for 3 a.m. to catch the sunrise from Cadillac Mountain, a thrilling endeavor that brought us together in anticipation. Cuddled for warmth and excitement, we witnessed the sun rise gracefully over the sea, casting an amber glow over the crowd. This experience was nothing short of cinematic, a moment that urged us to fully embrace and soak in the present.

Later, my sister and I set out to hike in Acadia National Park, but our plan went awry when we lost our way—no GPS, no visible trailheads, and no signal. Initially, frustration bubbled under the surface. Yet, with a shift in perspective, we paused, asked for directions, and found respite in the journey itself. "You can always turn the day around," my sister reassured me as we navigated to the Sieur de Monts Nature Center and eventually hiked the picturesque Jesup Path. We delighted in the simple beauty of Acadia’s white birch forest and the mesmerizing colors of the meadow swaying in the wind.

Bringing Coastal Wellness Home

Returning to Portland, our ride was filled with iced lattes and laughter as we reminisced about our favorite moments. In reflecting on the retreat, I was struck by the idea that coastal wellness need not end upon leaving New England. A 2022 study published in the Association for Psychological Sciences posits that feelings of awe—much like those we experienced during our trip—can significantly enhance our mental and physical health. By diminishing our sense of self-importance, we can elevate the sense of meaning in life. The outcomes—a boost in oxytocin and a reduction in inflammation—are achievable through simple activities like rising early to watch the sunrise, venturing outdoors for a hike, or simply appreciating the falling leaves on your next road trip. What’s even better? These experiences come at no financial cost.

Coastal wellness often gets lost in translation, reduced to strict diets, pricey gadgets, and rigid fitness regimes. Yet, my childhood summers spent in Maine underscored a more straightforward truth: genuine wellness is uncomplicated. It’s about relishing a scenic drive through Maine’s autumn foliage while sharing stories with family. It’s about stopping to admire a patch of vibrant leaves, a rare indulgence in our fast-paced lives. It’s about stepping out of our comfort zones, reaching out for help, and allowing ourselves to experience awe with frequency. By embracing these principles, anyone can cultivate their inner coastal grandmother and savor the beauty of simple living.
