Hair Care · Words by David Brown · Released
Matthew Lillard shares insights on navigating fame, parenting, and personal growth while reflecting on his past and future as an actor and entrepreneur.

Matthew Lillard might just be the embodiment of positive energy, and his demeanor can easily brighten a long press day. Recently, he juggled interviews following the premiere of his latest show, Carrie, all while managing the residual effects of his celebratory festivities. As he gears up for the premiere of the film Behemoth!, Lillard radiates an infectious enthusiasm, eager not just to chat about his successes but also to dive into everyday topics that connect us.

Recalling his 20s, Lillard's style journey is a reflection of growth and a touch of nostalgia. “Back then, I was just trying to look cool,” he recalls. “During Scream, I did a promotional photo shoot and ended up ‘borrowing’ a shirt I liked,” he explains. Sporting that same shirt at the premiere became a humorous highlight for him, encapsulating youthful aspirations and playful rebellion. Looking ahead to the Scream 7 premiere, he worked with a shirtmaker to recreate that iconic piece in an updated form. “No one may have noticed, but for me, it was a meaningful nod to my past.”

Lillard, who is well-known for his roles in films like Scooby-Doo and She’s All That, is now at the forefront of Behemoth!. As he prepares for this musical drama, he puts careful thought into his wardrobe choices. “As I’ve aged, investing in quality items that resonate with me has become important. It’s not about being fashionable for me; I appreciate a pair of good shoes or a tailored suit. Wearing something I love simplifies the decision-making and gives me confidence,” he shares.

As someone often referred to as one of Hollywood's kindest figures, Lillard lives by a philosophy of kindness, which permeates his interactions and parenting style. With three kids of his own, he expresses concern about the challenging world they’re growing up in—it's a reality marked by harrowing news and social media pressures. “Raising kids today is daunting, with so much negativity everywhere,” Lillard admits, illustrating how the ever-present darkness can feel suffocating.

Understanding the Pressures of Hollywood
Moreover, he emphasizes the importance of perspective when engaging with fans. Lillard believes that it’s vital to separate an individual's identity from the public perception created by fandom. “When fans approach you, it’s not about who you are; it’s about what you mean to them. Our job is to help people feel seen and valued,” he elaborates. This outlook is particularly refreshing in an industry often riddled with superficial judgments.

When discussing the mechanics of red-carpet appearances, Lillard offers an insider’s scoop: actors often receive allowances to secure outfits for events. During the promotional circuit for Carrie, he had to put together looks for 11 different events. However, instead of splurging, he opts to invest in timeless pieces like a new suit from Armani for the Behemoth! premiere, highlighting the practicality of his fashion choices.

“I find it liberating to know I’ll get repeated use out of a tailored item. I don’t buy frivolously,” he states, showcasing a commitment to sustainability and conscious consumption that many in Hollywood often overlook.

Parenting in Today’s World
Being a father to two queer kids, Lillard also shares his pride in their resilience and understanding of the complexities of the digital world. “My kids are equipped to handle the chaos online much better than I am,” he reflects. Their potency stems from their ability to navigate the ever-evolving nature of the internet, a skill Lillard admits he’s still developing. However, he remains impacted by the emotional weight of what he sees online, which stirs deep feelings within him.

As a parent, he has shared some of his broader works with them, watching their reactions to his directorial effort in Fat Kid Rules the World and films like SLC Punk!. Their lack of awe towards his career speaks to a family dynamic where Lillard’s profession is just another job, devoid of any grandiosity. “In my house, I’m just a dad. It’s only when I step outside that the reality of my work hits me,” he admits, underscoring the authenticity of family life.
A Life Beyond Acting
If not in front of the camera, Lillard envisions himself teaching acting or creatively immersed in the Renaissance Faire community. He reflects on how his trajectory in the industry has been unexpectedly fulfilling. “When I lived with Paul Rudd, I grappled with envy about his career progression. But then I realized that success isn’t finite; it doesn’t diminish my own path,” Lillard shares, shedding light on his mental evolution regarding success and ambition.
This transformative perspective allowed him to embrace the notion that the universe is abundant. His journey in Hollywood is complemented by entrepreneurial ventures, including Beadle & Grims—a company he founded to deliver high-quality gaming supplies for enthusiasts—and Find Familiar Spirits, which taps into the world of high-end spirits centered around fandom cultures. “Starting businesses has been this delightful and challenging exploration. I’ve never formally worked in business before, but leading these projects has provided me with invaluable life lessons,” he states proudly.
Finding Fulfillment Through Service
Describing the hardest jobs in the world, Lillard cites caregivers for those with dementia as the epitome of selflessness and compassion. “Watching the dedication of those providing care to my father highlights a profound way to live—serving those unable to express gratitude,” he notes, framing service and resilience as an inspirational model for how to navigate life’s challenges.
As Lillard continues to blend his artistic endeavors with personal growth, he remains grounded in his core values. His story embodies a journey that celebrates kindness, perspective, and connection—reminding both fans and peers in Hollywood that humanity transcends fame.
